2020-2021 Spiritual Theme

We are in the last year of our three year Spiritual Theme. The first year focused on social justice and Catholic social teaching as a lens for learning throughout the curriculum. The second year focuses on healthy relationships and family. The third year will allow for deep learning as we continue to explore the richness of the theme.

Deep Learning

The OCSB has introduced a Deep Learning Framework to help students achieve the highest levels of student success. Deep learning is defined as, creating and using new knowledge in the world, going beyond the mastery of existing content knowledge.* It is characterised by exploration, connectedness and broader, real-world purposes. By promoting our Deep Learning Framework in OCSB schools, our Catholic graduates will develop the competencies and dispositions that will prepare them to be creative, connected and collaborative life-long problem solvers. *Adapted from A Rich Seam by Fullan & Langworthy, 2014

Social Emotional Learning

The mental health of students is a large and focused priority for the Ottawa Catholic School Board. This focus is about proactively enhancing each student’s view of their own self-worth in order to grow their own positive social, emotional and spiritual well-being. Through social emotional learning and self regulation in the classroom we aim to achieve this.

Zones of Regulation

The zones of regulation are where students identify their emotions in order to use strategies to help get into an optimal learning zone. The blue zone describes when students may feel bored, tired or sad. The yellow zone describes when students may feel frustrated, anxious or scared. The red zone describes when students may feel angry, mad or aggressive. The green zone describes when students may feel content, calm or ready to learn. Tools are provided for students in order to help them get into their 'Green Zone'.

School Supplies

OCSB schools do not have mandatory school supplies, but we recommend pencil cases (with pencils, markers, erasers, pencil crayons, etc.), headphones, a backpack, a lunch pail, hand sanitizer, a full water bottle, and a mask. Please note that students will not have access to cubbies. All items will be kept in the student's personal classroom space.

If you are looking to contribute additional items to your child's classroom know that it is not mandatory but greatly appreciated. Sample useful items include Kleenex and hand sanitizer.
